Is fasting a condition for the i'tikaf of the last ten days?
Question
A person performs the i'tikaf of the last ten days of blessed Ramadan, but one day, by mistake, when morning had already come, he ate suhur thinking it was still night; now he breaks his fast (iftar) at sunset. Will no defect occur in the wajib i'tikaf?
Answer
Fasting is not a condition for this i'tikaf: [ar]وَالصَّوْمُ شَرْطٌ لِصِحَّةِ الِاعْتِكَافِ الْمَنْذُورِ. اهـ[/ar] “Fasting is a condition for the validity of the vowed (nadhr) i'tikaf” (al-Tahtawi, “Hashiya 'ala Maraqi al-Falah”, p. 578).
