Explanation of the Expiation for Fasting
Question
Owing to the baseness of the self, after marriage, in blessed Ramadan, intercourse was committed while fasting. On the advice of one religious scholar, 120 meals were calculated and their value given in cash to two poor people in a lump sum. Another religious scholar says that, since it was paid all at once, it has not been discharged: for 30 days one must either feed or give one and three-quarter seers (a seer is a unit of weight, ≈ 0.93 kg)
Answer
Breaking a fast of blessed Ramadan makes kaffara obligatory. The kaffara is to fast for two months consecutively. If he cannot fast due to weakness or illness, he should feed sixty poor people two meals to their fill, or give sixty poor people food — to each the equivalent of sadaqat al-fitr — or its value; in all these ways the kaffara will be discharged.
