The Expiation (Kaffara) for Fasting
Question
A person pays the kaffara for his fard fast in this way: he gives one person food for both mealtimes, without seating him in front of himself to feed him, and gives it like this for sixty days in succession; or he gives both fitra (sadaqat al-fitr) and food, that is, on some days fitra and on some days food. Is his kaffara discharged in every one of these ways or not? Or which way is better?
Answer
The kaffara for fasting is, first, to free a slave; if one is unable to do that, to fast for two months consecutively; if one is unable to do that, to feed sixty poor persons (miskin) two meals. If he gives food to one poor person (faqir), there are two ways of doing so.
