How to Make Up Many Fasts of Ramadan
Question
Zayd made his intention for making up the fasts missed over his lifetime in this way: “I am keeping the fast of mine that was missed.” Making the intention like this, he kept all the fasts. Are they valid or not? For the ruling is perhaps that one should intend: “I am keeping the make-up of the Ramadan of the first year, (then) of the second, of the third — in order.”
Answer
Had he made a specification (ta‘yin), this make-up would have been valid without any disagreement. Now that he has completed the fasts without specification, they are still valid according to one opinion: in Maraqi al-Falah, with reference to al-Khulasa, this opinion too is declared correct. There is no need to make them up again.
