Is a Majdhub Legally Responsible (Mukallaf)?
Question
Zayd says that prayer and fasting are waived for a majdhub (a person overcome by ecstatic rapture), while ‘Umar says they are not. Whose statement is correct?
Answer
If he understands the obligation (fard) of fasting and prayer and retains the awareness to perform them, then they are not waived for him; but if he neither understands the obligation nor retains awareness, then he is not a mukallaf (legally responsible).
