Does the Qur’an Establish Prayer at Only Three Times?
Question
A dear friend of mine has lately begun saying rather wayward, confused things. He says that the five daily prayers are not established by the Qur’an — only prayer at three times is established. He also says that only that hadith is reliable which agrees with the Wise Qur’an. Besides this, he also holds that on the face of the earth days and nights are shorter and longer — in some places the sun shines for only 4–5 hours in the day, and the night lasts 19–20 hours.
Answer
The Noble Qur’an says: [ar]وَمَآ ءَاتَىٰكُمُ ٱلرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ[/ar] “Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it…” (Surah al-Hashr, 59:7). It also says: [ar]وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا لِيُطَاعَ بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ[/ar] “We sent no messenger except to be obeyed by Allah’s leave…” (Surah al-Nisa’, 4:64).
