Reading a Book Aloud in the Mosque Before Jumu‘a and After Fajr
Question
It is my practice to read a book aloud [to people] in the mosque immediately after the Fajr prayer and after the first adhan of Jumu‘a. One of the worshippers objected that this disturbs those who are praying. I gave him no answer, and I am sending this request for a fatwa (istifta’) to you. The current practice of the Tablighi Jamaat and of the ulama can also be observed.
Answer
For Jumu‘a, decide it through consultation and inform all the worshippers that the book will be read after the first adhan, and let people come and join. When 5 minutes remain before the second adhan, i.e. the khutba, the book should be closed, and at that time everyone should pray the sunnas. In this way the book will be read and no one’s sunnas will be disturbed.
