Homeland by marriage (watan ta’ahhul)
Question
Should a man perform the shortened prayer (qasr) at his in-laws’ or not? And does the wife’s prayer, both shortened (qasr) and full (hadar), follow the husband in every case — that is, where the husband performs qasr the wife also performs qasr, and where the husband prays the full prayer (hadar) the wife also prays in full?
Answer
In the town where someone has married and where his wife lives permanently, he will not perform qasr. [ar]الوطن الأصلي هو موطن ولادته أو تأهله أو توطنه[/ar] “The original homeland is the place of his birth, or of his ta’ahhul (taking a family), or of his settling” (al-Durr al-Mukhtar).
