Recitation Behind the Imam

Question

Zayd says that reciting the Fatiha behind the imam is impermissible. Bakr says that without the Fatiha the prayer will not be valid, and that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ always did it. If not reciting is established, then prove it from the Qur’an, hadith and the reports (athar) of the Companions ﵃.

Answer

The proof of the Hanafis in this issue is [the verse]: [ar]إِذَا قُرِئَ ٱلْقُرْءَانُ فَٱسْتَمِعُوا۟ لَهُۥ وَأَنصِتُوا۟[/ar] “When the Qur’an is recited, listen to it and remain silent…” (Surah al-A‘raf, 7:204).
