The Report About Hazrat Jabir at the Battle of the Trench
Question
Question: A bid‘i religious scholar delivers a sermon every ‘Id in which he mentions the hospitality [feast] of Hazrat Jabir ﵁. In it he says that for the feast Hazrat Jabir ﵁ slaughtered a kid goat. Hazrat Jabir ﵁ had two small sons, who kept watching the kid being slaughtered. Afterwards one said to the other, “Come, let us slaughter too.” One lay down, the other wielded the knife — the child died (became a martyr).
Answer
This report is authentic only to the extent that, at the time of the Battle of the Trench, Hazrat Jabir ﵁ saw on the blessed face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ signs of exhaustion and weakness. Unable to bear this, he hurried home, slaughtered a kid goat, told his wife to cook the food, and himself informed the Noble Prophet ﷺ. He ﷺ asked what the food was.
