Is Learning a Lahja (Style of Recitation) Forbidden?

Question

A certain gentleman says that the way qaris read and teach recitation nowadays is entirely wrong. He declares it forbidden to learn a lahja (style of pronunciation) and to recite in accordance with it; in Surah al-Kahf he reads the word عِوَجَا with tanwin. Is it correct to learn a lahja and recite according to it, or is this wrong?

Answer

Just as the noble Qur’an was revealed to the noble Prophet ﷺ, he taught it to the Companions ﵃, and they in turn taught it in the same manner to those who came after; the original lahja (manner of recitation) is established by the noble hadith. Moreover, each Companion recited to others in exactly the same manner in which he had heard the noble Prophet ﷺ recite.
