Are the Pause Marks (Waqf) in the Noble Qur’an and Their Signs an Innovation (Bid‘a)?
Question
Question: In order that those reciting the Noble Qur’an may pause and take breath at a suitable point, the scholars of waqf (pausing) have established types of pause: for example, "tamm" (complete), "mukhtar" (preferred), "kafi" (sufficient), "ja’iz" (permissible), "hasan" (good), "fatih" [as given in the source], "matruk" (abandoned), and others.
Answer
Every branch of knowledge has its own terminology — as with sarf, nahw, ma‘ani, badi‘, hadith, usul al-hadith, tafsir, fiqh, and usul al-fiqh. It is difficult to establish that all these terms go back to the Noble Prophet ﷺ and the noble Companions ﷃ.
