The Warning against Forgetting the Memorized Qur’an
Question
A man had memorized the Holy Qur’an but, through negligence, forgot it. Now, in old age, he has become mindful of this, but he cannot recall it. If, instead, he increases his voluntary (nafl) prayers, can he thereby escape the warning (wa‘id) directed at one who memorizes and then forgets? Or is it better for him to persist in trying to memorize it — whether or not he succeeds in remembering it?
Answer
That warning applies only to the case where a person is not even able to recite [the Qur’an] by looking at the text — so states “Badhl al-Majhud”.
