Recording the Qur’an on a Gramophone and Listening to It
Question
A certain man of rank and influence has a gramophone in his house, in which, with the utmost melodiousness, verses of the Sacred Book are recited, and the oneness of Allah Most High is expounded and affirmed with ample eloquence. It also contains the praiseworthy qualities of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, accounts of Hazrat Ibrahim ﵇, the Friend of Allah, permissible edifying stories, and praise of the pious Sufis; Khwaja Mu’in al-Din ﵀ is said to have approved of this instrument.
Answer
The gramophone is an instrument of idle amusement, by means of which pleasure-seeking, worldly people, heedless of religion, amuse themselves and pass the time. It also involves singing and music, and lewd and mocking love-songs are recited on it as well.
