Recording the Noble Quran on Gramophone Records and Trading in Them

Question

(1) What is the ruling on recording, or having recorded, onto gramophone records the verses of the Noble Qur’an and na‘t odes (poems in praise of the Prophet) in which the blessed name of the Master of creation, the Pride of all existence ﷺ, and his praiseworthy attributes and miracles are mentioned — when such records are then played in the chambers of prostitutes who trade in beauty, in taverns, in marketplaces, or, during times of revelry and merrymaking, in mansions and bungalows? (2)

Answer

(1) The gramophone is among the instruments of idle amusement (lahw wa la‘ib); therefore recording sacred subject matter on it, and listening to or playing it merely for entertainment, is impermissible. Playing it in the aforementioned places in particular is a cause of the gravest dishonouring [of what is sacred]; avoiding this is therefore necessary. (2)
