Publishing Verses of the Qur’an and Their Translation in Newspapers

Question

In some newspapers and magazines, verses of the Noble Qur’an are published from time to time, which people generally then sell as waste paper. Now the question is: how is selling them as waste paper, and publishing verses in newspapers and magazines, to be judged? Also, if only an Urdu or Hindi translation is published, what is the ruling in the case mentioned?

Answer

For the sake of spreading the religion, it is permissible to write down the verses, translate them, and print and publish them; but using them as waste paper is not permissible — it is contrary to the required reverence. Reverence is obligatory even for a mere translation.
