Reading Grammar and Logic Books without Wudu
Question
(a) A book in which, besides fiqh and usul, the Noble Qur’an and hadith are written — for example, a book on nahw (Arabic grammar) — how is it to read such a book without wudu? (b) And a book in which, apart from the basmala, neither Qur’an nor hadith is written — for example, a book on mantiq (logic) — may a person in janaba (major ritual impurity) read such a book or not? Also, how is it to touch the books of the mufassirin (Qur’an commentators) without wudu?
Answer
(a) It is permissible to read such a book on nahw without wudu. (b) A person in janaba may read such a book: when there is need, it is permissible, though it is better not to; and when he touches it, he should not place his hand on the spot where the Noble Qur’an is written.
