A Khatm of the Qur’an Recited by Minor Children
Question
In our homes a blessed khatm [complete recitation of the Qur’an] is arranged. Many of the children taking part in the reading are impure (in a state of minor impurity) and have no discernment of purity and impurity at all. The Holy Qur’an contains a verse of prostration (sajda) in several places, yet they do not perform a single prostration. Is it correct to hold the khatm in this manner or not?
Answer
Sajda al-tilawa (the prostration of recitation) is not obligatory (wajib) upon children who are minors and lack legal discernment. When they recite the Holy Qur'an, they too receive reward for it. It is the duty of adults to teach them to distinguish purity from impurity.
