Alleged Signs and Evidences of Tahrif (Alteration) in the Holy Qur’an
Question
Question: Generally, Muslims believe that no alteration (tahrif) has occurred in the Qur’an. Below, however, we set out reasons that appear to point to the possibility that alteration of the Qur’an occurred in early times. (1) “Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim” is part of the thirtieth verse of Surah al-Naml and constitutes revelation (wahy). In arranging the text of the Qur’an, it was added at the start of every surah (except Surah al-Tawba)
Answer
(1) In Surah al-Naml, “Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim” is not an independent verse but part of a verse; whereas at the start of every [other] surah, “Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim” is a complete, independent verse.
