The Occasion of Revelation of the Verse “When the Qur’an Is Recited, Listen to It”

Question

[ar]بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ[/ar] [ar]بخدمة جناب فخر المحدثين مولانا المولوي محمد زكريا صاحب[/ar] To the presence of the honourable Fakhr al-Muhaddithin, Mawlana al-Mawlawi Muhammad Zakariyya. [ar]السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته[/ar] Peace, the mercy of Allah, and His blessings be upon you! (1) Please write regarding the following verse: what is its occasion of revelation, and give its tafsir along with the year [of revelation].

Answer

(1) Firstly, some of the noble Companions used to recite [the Qur'an] behind the imam [in prayer]; this verse was revealed to forbid them from doing so. Hafiz Abu Bakr al-Jassas al-Razi transmitted the same in his tafsir “Ahkam al-Qur’an”; Tafsir Ibn Kathir also contains this report from Ibn ‘Abbas and ‘Abdullah ibn Mughaffal, and in “al-Ta‘liq al-Hasan” a consensus (ijma‘)
