Is There Guidance for the Wrongdoer (Zalim)?
Question
In the Noble Qur’an [it is said]: [ar]إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ[/ar] “Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.” Does this include a wrongdoing Muslim as well? Is a supplication (du‘a) for the guidance of a wrongdoing Muslim, or a wrongdoing kafir, accepted, or not? What is meant here by the negation of guidance?
Answer
The essential wrongdoer (zalim) is the polytheist (mushrik), regarding whom the negation “does not guide” has come, [as in the verse]: [ar]إِنَّ ٱلشِّرْكَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِيمٌ[/ar] “Indeed, associating partners [with Allah] is a great wrong” (Surah Luqman, 31:13). By the negation of guidance here is meant negation in the existential (takwini) sense, not the legislative (tashri‘i)
