Was Iblis Also Addressed by the Command to Prostrate to Adam?
Question
If, according to the verse: [ar]خَلَقْتَنِى مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن طِينٍ[/ar] “You created me from fire and created him from clay” (Surah al-A‘raf, 7:12) — Iblis belonged to the race of jinn, then how did he come to be at fault by being addressed by [the command]: [ar]وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ ٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِـَٔادَمَ[/ar] “And when We said to the angels, ‘Prostrate to Adam’” (Surah al-Baqara, 2:34)?
Answer
This verse has numerous interpretations (tafsirs), and various opinions have been expressed about Iblis. One opinion is this: Iblis belonged to the race of jinn — so why then was he at fault? The answer is that the command to prostrate was given to the jinn as well, and the singling out of the angels [in the address] was because of their nobility (sharaf).
