Does Suckling Arise from Putting the Breast in a Child’s Mouth?

Question

Zayd’s mother once put her breast into the mouth of Bakr, who is her nephew (her brother’s son), and immediately the woman’s father came, and on his forbidding it she took her breast out. Can Zayd now, according to the Shari‘a, marry Bakr’s daughter or not? The woman’s words are that the milk did not enter the boy’s mouth.

Answer

Since the milk did not reach his throat, the prohibition by suckling has not been established by this. [ar]فَلَوِ الْتَقَمَ الْحَلَمَةَ وَلَمْ يُدْرَ أَدَخَلَ اللَّبَنُ فِي حَلْقِهِ أَمْ لَا، لَا يَحْرُمُ[/ar] “If he took the nipple into his mouth and it is not known whether the milk entered his throat or not, the prohibition does not arise” (“al-Durr al-Mukhtar”).
