The Cessation of Childbearing Does Not End the Nikah

Question

What do the scholars of the religion say regarding this matter: after Zayd’s marriage two sons were born, who died. After that children stopped being born, because the woman was no longer fit for a man. People say that since Zayd’s wife is no longer fit for a man, she has gone out of Zayd’s nikah. Is such a statement of the people correct according to the pure Shari‘a or not?

Answer

The people’s statement that in this case Zayd’s nikah has ended is wrong and based on ignorance. Even in such a case the nikah remains in force according to the Shari‘a, and the full mahr is wajib, whether Zayd marries another woman or contents himself with her. If the wife herself forgives the mahr, it will be forgiven.
