Several Nikahs in One Gathering: Which Is Preferable?
Question
At a Tablighi gathering thirty men were married. Among them, Bakr had his nikah read first of all. Zayd said to Bakr: “You made a mistake; you should have had your nikah read last of all. [ar]سَيِّدُ الْقَوْمِ خَادِمُهُمْ[/ar] ‘The master of a people is their servant.’” Bakr replied: “The claim is about Iran and the proof about Turan. Whatever I did was entirely right. [ar]﴿فَٱسْتَبِقُوا۟ ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِ﴾[/ar] ‘So race one another in good deeds’ (Surah al-Baqara, 2:148).
Answer
If the need and benefit (maslaha) lie in going first, then going first is better; if they lie in going later, then going later is better. The saying “The master of a people is their servant” does not apply here.
