The Sehra, Flower Bracelets and Similar Wedding Customs
Question
What is the ruling on tying the sehra (wedding garland veil) on the groom’s head at a wedding, putting flower bracelets and garlands on his hands and around his neck, and taking him on a mount?
Answer
The groom’s sehras, flower bracelets and the like are originally customs of the Hindus of India which have survived in ignorant, non-practising and newly converted families, and through association with them have spread to other Muslims of this kind who are unobservant and careless. Therefore abandoning them is wajib.
