Exchanging Gifts at Nikah

Question

At the time of the nikah negotiations neither side made any condition of any kind of giving and taking. But if at the time of the contract something is given to the bridegroom from the girl’s side, is it lawful in the Shari‘a or not?

Answer

If no condition is made there, and there is no custom of this giving and taking, and they do not have it in mind that something will be given or something will be taken, and then someone, on the basis of the new relationship, out of joy gives something from the young man’s side or from the girl’s side, there is no harm in it.
