Jewellery Given to the Bride from the Groom’s Side at the Wedding
Question
A year has passed since my wedding, and the bride’s send-off to her husband’s home has not yet taken place. Now, for the send-off, the girl’s family say that jewellery and some clothes must be brought for the girl, and the girl’s family are insisting on having this dowry sent, because the women of their household say that the boy’s side is extremely poor: what does he have? People are busy inciting the girl’s family in all sorts of ways.
Answer
If some jewellery and the like is given to the bride from the groom’s side, this is not forbidden by the Shari‘a; rather, if one has the means, one should give it. However, insisting on it and announcing it, which is done for fame and show — that is forbidden.
