Nikah of a Deobandi Girl with a Barelvi Young Man
Question
Zayd follows the path of the scholars of Deoband, and he unknowingly married his daughter to a young man of the Barelvi school, whereas in his household mawlid, fatiha, qiyam and salam are held; he visits the shrines of saints, holds that the Messenger ﷺ has knowledge of the unseen (‘ilm al-ghayb), raises the slogan “Ya Rasul Allah!”, chants the litany “Ya Ghawth, al-madad!” (“O Ghawth, help!”) and regards the Messenger ﷺ as present everywhere and all-seeing.
Answer
Since the school of Zayd and of Zayd’s daughter is the same as the school of the scholars of Deoband, and because of this school that young man regards the scholars of Deoband as outside Islam, then in his view Zayd too is outside Islam and Zayd’s daughter too is outside Islam. Therefore, in his view, his nikah was never valid at all.
