A Non-Muslim Woman’s Acceptance of Islam and Her Nikah
Question
(1) If a woman of the Hindu community, having fallen in love with a Muslim young man, wishes to accept Islam, and neither her community nor the law has any objection to her accepting Islam, does the Shari‘a in this situation permit that this woman be brought into Islam? (2) If a Muslim young man, living with people of a low caste, ate what is haram, and then, remorseful over his act, repents — is this repentance valid? Or does the Shari‘a command that he be brought into Islam anew? (3)
Answer
(1) This woman should be brought into Islam. (2) Doing a forbidden deed is a sin, and repenting from sin is fard; and by committing a sin one does not leave Islam. Therefore bringing him into Islam anew, i.e. renewing his Islam (tajdid al-islam), is not fard.
