A Blind Man May Also Perform the Nikah
Question
If a blind man recites the khutba (nikah sermon) from memory, will the nikah be valid or not, given that he saw neither the agent (wakil), nor the groom, nor the witnesses?
Answer
If sighted witnesses to the offer and acceptance (ijab and qabul) are present, the nikah will be valid, even if the one reciting the khutba is blind. Editor’s note: because the essence of nikah is the offer and acceptance, and this has already taken place in the presence of two blind (?) witnesses; the nikah khutba is only a sunna, and the nikah is valid even without a khutba.
