Announcing the Nikah
Question
Is announcement necessary at the time of the nikah or not? And if the people of the groom’s wedding procession are present in large numbers, is it still necessary or not? And by what means is announcement permissible in the Sacred Law? Among us it is the custom that at a wedding the announcement is made with the instruments of singing and music that are customary in the wedding procession. Is this correct or not?
Answer
Announcing the nikah is mandub (recommended): [ar]وَيُنْدَبُ إِعْلَانُهُ[/ar] “It is mandub to announce it” (“al-Durr al-Mukhtar”, vol. 2, p. 404). For the announcement at the time of the contract, merely beating the daff (frame drum) is sufficient, whereas playing instruments and the like in the prevailing manner, as described in the question, is not permissible.
