Is the Nikah Khutba Delivered Sitting or Standing?
Question
What need is there for a khutba at a wedding? Can a marriage not take place without a khutba? If the khutba is necessary, should it be read sitting or standing? Since the Friday khutba is read standing, this one too should be read standing.
Answer
Reading the nikah khutba is neither a condition (shart) nor a pillar (rukn); rather it is mandub (recommended): [ar]وَيُنْدَبُ إِعْلَانُهُ وَتَقْدِيمُ خُطْبَةٍ وَكَوْنُهُ فِي مَسْجِدٍ يَوْمَ جُمُعَةٍ[/ar] “It is mandub to announce it (the nikah), to precede it with a khutba, and for it to be in a mosque on a Friday” (“al-Durr al-Mukhtar”, vol. 2, p. 402).
