The Nikah Khutba While Standing

Question

An imam has come to our town who reads the nikah khutba standing and says that reading it standing is masnun (according to the sunna). As proof he argues that all the khutbas the Prophet ﷺ delivered, he delivered standing, whereas delivering the nikah khutba sitting is nowhere established in the hadith. Is there support for the permissibility of delivering the nikah khutba standing? Does the nikah khutba resemble the Friday khutba and the khutba of istisqa’ (the prayer for rain)?

Answer

It is permissible to read it standing and also to read it sitting. Whoever says that reading the nikah khutba standing is masnun bears the burden of proof: let him present evidence from hadith and fiqh. It is transmitted in the hadith on several occasions that the Prophet ﷺ delivered a khutba while sitting; hadiths on this are found in “Sahih Muslim” and in “al-Adab al-Mufrad”.
