The ruling on the Jumu'a khutba

Question

Are the two khutbas of Jumu'a [merely] preferable (afdal), wajib or sunna? And is it sunna or wajib to deliver one [khutba] from memory, or both from memory, or to read the second khutba looking at a book, or both looking at a book?

Answer

The khutba itself is a condition for the validity of Jumu'a, and two khutbas are sunna. From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ it is established that both were [delivered] only from memory. If someone does not know them by heart, he should read looking at a book.
