The ruling on the khutba of Jumu'a and the two Eids

Question

Is the khutba of the two Eids and of Jumu'a fard, wajib, sunna or mustahabb? And what is the status of listening to it?

Answer

The khutba of Jumu'a is a condition (fard), while [the khutba] of the two Eids is sunna. Listening to both is wajib for those present. [ar]وَشَرْطُ صِحَّتِهَا أَيِ الْجُمُعَةِ الْخُطْبَةُ[/ar] “The condition of its — that is, Jumu'a's — validity is the khutba” (“al-Bahr”, vol. 2, p. 146).
