Is one who dies in a vehicle accident a martyr?

Question

The cause of Zayd’s death was an accident involving a motor truck, a train or a tractor, and immediately after the accident his soul departed; there was not even time for bandaging or medical treatment. What will now be the procedure for Zayd’s ghusl, kafan and so on?

Answer

He should be washed in accordance with the ordinary sunna and dressed in a kafan. In terms of the rulings of the Hereafter he is a martyr (shahid); in terms of worldly rulings he is not a martyr.
