Is one killed in riots a martyr or not?

Question

Muslims who are killed in communal riots while putting up resistance, or [when] some Muslim is suddenly stabbed with a knife — will he be a martyr (shahid) in the view of the Shari‘a or not?

Answer

Whoever is killed wrongfully (without right) is a martyr (shahid).
