Washing and shrouding of a martyr
Question
Nowadays, in communal riots, Muslims are killed merely for the “crime” of being Muslims. In such cases people wash the slain person and, removing the blood-stained clothes, prepare him for burial and shroud him in other cloth. Should they be washed and shrouded in new cloth?
Answer
Muslims who are killed in communal riots — if they are not apostates, are sane and adult, and are not in the state of major ritual impurity (hadath akbar) — then (whether man or woman) they are to be shrouded in that same blood and those same clothes and, without being washed, buried after the prayer is performed over them.
