One killed unjustly is a martyr (shahid)
Question
Muslims who die in a Hindu–Muslim riot under some circumstance: in one case a Muslim is killed while fighting, the two parties confronting each other; in the other case some Muslim is coming along, and some Hindu treacherously attacks and kills that very Muslim. What kind of death does the Muslim die in both cases — do they die as one of the types of martyrs (shahid)?
Answer
On what grounds did the riot occur — was there a Shar‘i reason or a non-Shar‘i one, and was it started by the Muslims or by the Hindus? The innocent Muslim whom a Hindu killed unjustly is a martyr (shahid).
