Payment for Isal al-Thawab

Question

Zayd recited a khatm of the Qur'an for someone and is demanding from that person: “In return for this khatm of the Qur'an, give us eleven rupees.” Is it permissible to take [money] in this way or not?

Answer

Taking this is impermissible and giving it is impermissible too; both the taker and the giver will be sinful: [ar]قَالَ تَاجُ الشَّرِيعَةِ فِي شَرْحِ الْهِدَايَةِ: إِنَّ الْقُرْآنَ بِالْأُجْرَةِ لَا يَسْتَحِقُّ الثَّوَابَ، لَا لِلْمَيِّتِ وَلَا لِلْقَارِئِ.
