Condolence and Isal al-Thawab on the Death of the Respected Gandhi

Question

(1) The respected Gandhi followed the Hindu religion, but at the same time he often recited the Qur'anic suras al-Ikhlas and al-Fatiha, and at his worship gatherings he would have the Qur'an recited and listen to it; and he supported the Muslims. If, after offering condolence, a Muslim recites the Qur'an or makes du‘a for him in a gathering of non-Muslims, will that Muslim be sinful or not?

Answer

(1) For one whose kufr is certain, it is not permissible to make du‘a for forgiveness (maghfira) or to convey reward to him by reciting the Noble Qur'an: [ar]وَالْحَقُّ حُرْمَةُ الدُّعَاءِ بِالْمَغْفِرَةِ لِلْكَافِرِ[/ar] “The truth is that making du‘a for forgiveness for a kafir is prohibited” (“al-Durr al-Mukhtar”).
