Carrying the deceased to the graveyard with music and dancing, and placing the chain of spiritual lineage in the grave
Question
Zayd’s mother, who had reached the age of 80, passed away. Her janaza was held back for 24 hours while waiting for the fellow disciples of the same spiritual guide. After that the deceased was taken from the house to the graveyard with English (Western) bands, with dancing, in stages. Zayd says that it is permissible at any time. The second question: is it proper to place the chain of spiritual lineage of a Sufi order in the grave or not?
Answer
Holding back the body for 24 hours while waiting for the fellow disciples, and taking it to the grave with dancing and music, is wrong according to the Shari‘a and a major sin; it is necessary to make tawba and istighfar (repentance and seeking forgiveness) for it publicly.
