Some superstitions connected with the grave
Question
A man passed away, and his followers did the following things in connection with his preparation (tajhiz), shrouding and burial: (1) After the funeral prayer had been performed, they deliberately delayed digging the grave on the grounds that his disciples were coming from far away — so that those people could see the face of the spiritual guide. (2) Having placed the deceased in the grave, they kept the grave open for one or two days. (3) They ground small cardamom and applied it to the body of the deceased. (4)
Answer
Even the smallest mustahabb acts connected with the deceased, his washing, burial and grave are mentioned in the books of fiqh. The things asked about are mentioned neither in the Noble Qur’an, nor in the noble hadith, nor in the authoritative books of fiqh. Hence all of these things are baseless, without proof; they are ignorance, misguidance and bid‘a (innovation in religion)
