Burning incense sticks at burial and supplication after burial

Question

What is the ruling on burning incense sticks and frankincense in the graveyard? And what is the ruling on reciting al-Fatiha at the grave with both hands raised?

Answer

Incense sticks and frankincense should not be burned in the graveyard. When washing the deceased, it is correct to perfume with incense the board on which the washing is done, and likewise to perfume the kafan with incense and [then] clothe the deceased in it. As for the grave, [this] is not established there; it is a bid‘a and prohibited.
