The order between the funeral prayer and the sunna and nafl prayers

Question

This happened a few days ago: a deceased had already been brought to the mosque and the funeral prayer was to be performed. After the fard prayer had been performed in congregation, people began praying the sunna and nafl prayers, and the funeral prayer was performed after the sunnas and nafls. I asked the leading imam of the mosque: was not the fard kifaya to take precedence over the sunnas and nafls?

Answer

[ar]تقدم صلاة الجنازة على سنة المغرب، لكن في البحر: الفتوى على تأخير الجنازة عن السنة[/ar] “The funeral prayer is given precedence over the sunna of maghrib; however, in al-Bahr: the fatwa is on deferring the janaza until after the sunna” (“al-Durr al-Mukhtar”).
