Collective Du‘a after the Funeral Prayer
Question
In some places there is a custom that after the funeral prayer, that is, after the salams and before the bier is lifted, all the people stand, raise their hands and make du‘a for the deceased. The bier is not lifted before this du‘a is made, and those who do not make the du‘a are reproached as abandoners of the sunna. These people claim that it is sunna (in the du‘a they recite Surah al-Fatiha, al-Ikhlas and so on).
Answer
Those who call such a practice sunna should be asked: in which hadith, in which book of fiqh is it? But you did not ask them for proof — there must have been some wisdom in that. The jurists have prohibited standing separately (mustaqillan)
