How much space should be left between the rows of the funeral prayer?
Question
What of leaving space for ruku‘ and sujud when forming the rows in the funeral prayer? Is it haram to make du‘a with raised hands after giving the salam in the funeral prayer? And what is the ruling about one who has done so? There is much dispute among the people here. Some people have declared that this is a mosque of the Deobandi creed; whoever names the Barelvi creed will be killed, and people of the Barelvi creed may not pray in the mosque. On this matter some people are with the imam and some are opposed.
Answer
In the funeral prayer there is neither ruku‘ nor sajda, so leaving space for ruku‘ and sajda when forming the rows is out of place. In the funeral prayer there is a dedicated du‘a for the deceased; indeed, the funeral prayer was legislated precisely for du‘a — that after reciting the praise and glorification (hamd wa thana’) and the salawat (after the first takbir)
