The funeral prayer without ablution

Question

The imam led the funeral prayer without ritual purity (tahara). In this case, will the prayer of the followers (muqtadis) be fulfilled or not?

Answer

A funeral prayer that the imam led without ablution will not be valid — neither for the imam nor for his followers. If [the deceased] has already been buried, the prayer should be performed over the grave, as long as there is no preponderant supposition that [the body of] the deceased has disintegrated; otherwise, forgiveness (istighfar) should be sought [for him].
