How Iman Is Renewed and What the Causes of Kufr Are

Question

In reply to my letter, Hazrat Wala wrote that if a person has left Islam on account of some word or deed, then such a person needs, together with the renewal of iman, also to disavow the causes of kufr. An explanation of this is requested. (1) What does the renewal of iman mean and what is its method? (2) What is meant by the causes of kufr, and what are they? (3) If he has already paid zakat, must he pay it again — assuming he has the means?

Answer

(1) Let him utter the kalimah of testimony with his tongue and affirm it with his heart, and let him also avow that thing the denial of which took him out of iman. And if, having left Islam, he adopted, say, Christianity, then let him disavow and dissociate himself from it. (2)
